Making the Correct Decision (R.Williams or Walker)

August 16th, 2007 | by aaron |

Both receivers are #1 options on any fantasy franchise and each player possesses game-breaking abilities. Javon Walker proved in Denver that it doesn’t matter who throws him the ball and should once again put up impressive numbers in 2006. With Denver’s run game we should see plenty of production and possibly another season of 1300 and 8+ touchdowns from Walker. However, without a viable receiving threat opposite Walker he could face numerous double teams.

On the other hand, Roy Williams has continued to showcase his abilities by giving opposing defenses headaches. Now, with Calvin Johnson opposite and the 100 catch man Mike Furrey, double teams are non-existent and Williams should produce his best numbers as a professional.

Here are a few more things to consider when deciding on which receiver is the better option:

1. Jon Kitna is talking about throwing 50 touchdowns, while 2nd year pro Jay Cutler is still finding himself in the NFL.

2. Denver will protect Cutler whereas Kitna will find himself in many hurried situations.

3. Detroit hasn’t proven capable of running the ball since Barry Sanders’ retirement and Denver is notorious for stretching defenses with both the run and pass.

This really is a tough situation when you consider the fact that Calvin Johnson could either hurt or help Williams’ situation and when you consider that Walker is the only receiving threat on the Broncos. Both players are even in their abilities and may produce similar type numbers. However, Williams has a slight edge because Detroit’s will have to play from behind in most contests while forcing multiple passing situations for Williams.

Which receiver will you choose?

This is one of the toughest comparisons on the board. And in most of my non-keeper drafts there has come that round where both players are staring me in the face and I know I should be choosing one of them. I give Williams the slight edge, more due to Cutler probably going through some growing pains, than actually comparing Williams/ Walker. Johnson should help free up Roy, but at the same time defenses need to stop Denver’s run freeing up Walker (wheras Detroits run game is weak, and Defenses sit back on Kitna). It is a very close call.
