Fantasy Starters/Controversial Backups

July 16th, 2007 | by aaron |

Needless to say, Peyton Manning will lead all NFL QB’s in overall fantasy production. However, which QB’s will compete for his spot at the top? From 1-12 these are the QB’s that offer the best opportunity at winning.

1. Peyton Manning 2. Carson Palmer 3. Drew Brees 4.Tom Brady

5. Jon Kitna 6. Marc Bulger 7. Donovan McNabb 8.Tony Romo

9. Jay Cutler 10. Used to be Michael Vick 11.Trent Green 12.Phillip Rivers

Let’s suppose five or six of these top-twelve QB’s begin to struggle and you consider benching him and implementing your quality backup into the starting lineup. Sometimes that’s easier said than done and after coming off of two horrible games you figure your starter will improve because his history has proven that this will not last long.

On the other hand, your starting QB is playing decent, but your backup is playing much better (would’ve won a game or two) and has forced you to make a decision to play him. An amateur play is to second guess whom to start. With only 16 weeks of play (that’s if you make the playoffs) there is no time to make mistakes. Remember, all players have bad runs and/or bad seasons and they do not live up to your expectations. Do not beat a dead horse, bench your starter and at least you will know what to expect from one of these quality backups.

1. Matt Leinart 2. Jeff Garcia 3. Chad Pennington

4. Steve McNair 5. Ben Roethlisberger 6. Eli Manning 7. J.P Losman

On the list below these QB’s have not shown much preseason value to begin the year as a starting QB on any fantasy franchise. However, after a few weeks of play it is possible that they could create an enormous amount controversy within your franchise. This type of controversy can be overwhelmingly frustrating and extremely difficult when deciding whom to start. However, their success is only temporary- they will come back down to earth. I try to stay as far away as possible from these types of fantasy QB’s. By drafting one of these players, it will only make it tougher in your weekly decision making process. One week they are on top of the world, and the next week they perform a disappearing act quicker than Bobby Fischer.

1. Rex Grossman

2. Byron Leftwich

3. Jake Delhomme

4. Jason Campbell

5. Brett Favre

6. Vince Young

The only solution for avoiding this type of controversy is…

1. Draft one of the top six.

2. Accept what your starters have to offer, or bench him and live with the results of your backup. (Don’t second guess!)

3. Use the tools and resources provided to help you make an informed decision on whom to start.
