I’m Not A Geek

I just read a blog from wordpress that has me pondering this thought (the first time in my life) of why the word “fantasy” is used for fantasy sports. Why not “sim sports” or “statball” or something that doesn’t “conjure up images” of a bunch of geeks playing D&D or Warhammer in the basement of our parents home?
Maybe it’s because I am an ex-athlete who never had a problem being viewed as a geek. I’m not a geek and I have never been considered a geek so I guess the ‘geek’ word has never crossed my mind (not much does). On the other hand, I have also played poker for over 15 years (way before holdem became popular) and when I started playing fantasy football in ‘93′ I looked at it as a way to pick up several hundred dollars before Christmas.
I have to be honest though, I’ve always wondered why people looked at me like I was crazy when I tried to explain fantasy football to them, (I have honestly felt stupid before). I guess it makes sense that a person who is unfamiliar with the game of fantasy sports (try explaining it to somebody that has never heard of it) when hearing the word ‘fantasy’ would have to be thinking, “what a dork” or, ”this dude is an idiot”. I guess if I were in that same position, I’d be like, “what the f%$# is this guy talking about, this mutha f……” well, you get the point.
Anyway, no reason to change it now since fantasy sports are beginning to soar to new levels and people are seeing how enjoyble and sometimes profitable they have become. I guess all we need is a television show, screenplay, or something similar to push fantasy sports into mainstream society. Hopefully, that day is near so I don’t have to continue to explain it to people and they look at me like, “WTF”.

I think fantasy baseball came first, and they called it strat-o-matic or something like that, and then rotisserie baseball. I’m not sure when we decided to move over to “Fantasy”.
