FANTASY’S VERSATILIY
May 14th, 2007 | by aaron |Last night as I watched the Golden State/Utah game I learned that Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson were all having their own fantasy contest for the playoffs. Barkley was in the lead but Kenny and Ernie were relatively close. I didn’t catch who their players were but I’m sure those guys are having a ball trash talking. TNT could not have come up with a funnier, more entertaining lineup than those three knuckleheads.
That’s why fantasy sports are great. No matter what your favorite sports are, you can always find a group of people willing to participate in a weekly, monthly, or annual fantasy league. For example, my wife was an avid Browns fan who after converting to fantasy football, began watching football as much as I do. Fantasy does not discriminate between age, athletic ability, or gender. (My wife has won our league of 10 and people were pissed!) Anyone can play and those who we think are ‘dead money’ in the league, normally find a way to surprise us. Sure there is an element of luck involved in fantasy, but to get lucky you have to be prepared. Fantasy Sports have already and will continue to turn your average sports fan into an avid viewer and fiend for action.
Fantasy is a way for people to prove that they are correct in their thinking. It’s our chance to make decisions and prove that most NFL franchises have no idea what they’re doing. There is nothing sweeter than drafting a stud rookie in a fantasy draft when every NFL franchise passed him until the later rounds. On the other hand, in the NBA when everyone would agree that Wade or Kobe is better than LeBron and LeBron’s fantasy stats dominate the entire league. (They should make fantasy stats the determining factor when selecting MVP)
Fantasy sports is an awesome way of becoming familiar with the different sports, therefore, the money is not always the number one priority when it comes to participating. However, I don’t care who you are, money is always the ultimate benefit. Outside of the weekly wagers and sometimes daily, football season has always been my favorite because; the money is always paid approximately one week before Christmas.
